For thousands of years, a great human tradition, shared throughout virtually every culture on Earth, is the presence of pets and animal companions. For the vast majority of this time, animals were used for their ability to work, but, in more recent centuries, the presence of the humble pet - usually a cat or dog - has simply been for the sheer reason of love.
